*Problem Elephants around Guludo

*Mozambique's 17-year civil war had a direct effect on the behaviour of the elephants in this region. With no protectection, poaching increased causing the elephants to become more and more wary of humans. As a result of the poaching and angry farmers the elephants have now become nocturnal and very timid.

:  long lasting traditions
> a problem elephant
Rueia, a village about 4 miles from Guludo, is the best place to go and view the elephants. In Rueia there are two water holes that the elephants often frequent after the sun goes down. One is used for bathing, the other for drinking. Once finished there they go in search for food. Normally the piri piri ropes around the mashambas (click here for more info) persuades them to resist an easy meal of maize and vegetables and they carry on along their traditional paths, throughout the Guludo area to find fruits and leaves. By the time the sun has risen the elephants are walking on the road they have carved out of the thick vegetation and disappear into the inaccessible bush, away from human activity.

:  guludo's immanent conflict with the elephants
After a dry rainy season that finished early in March the elephants have managed to exhaust the limited water supply from Rueias' water holes. Due to this, last week the elephants started to come to Guludo for water. Here lies the conflict. Would you want share your drinking and washing water with elephants? Not surprisingly the Guludo community do not want the elephants around. Our challenge is to work with the community to create solutions to the conflicts so the elephants aren't pushed out of their traditional area. We are currently working with the Guludo community to make an old disused well functional again. To be kept up to date on the progress of the well, how this conflict with the elephants develops and to see all the latest pictures please click here.
