 | | | DUGONG TRACKS found in the Guludo Bay | |
| | | | On the 3rd August 2006, while a WWF party were visiting Guludo Beach Lodge, dugong tracks were found while diving off Gluudo's house reef, "Rays Reef". Dugongs (or sea cows) 'grub' when they eat, taking the whole of the sea grass roots leaving unmistakable dugong troughs in the sea grass bed.
The Guludo Bay is the perfect habitat for dugongs, where dugongs were once prolific. However, according to local fishermen, they are now almost all but gone due to their "fathers and grandfathers hunting them all". In fact, almost everyone over the age of 35 will tell you how good these mystic animals taste.
However, there is now hope for dugongs in this region. The current theory is that the dugongs are going out into safer, deeper waters during the day and coming into the bay at night to feed in the sea grass beds. After a little more investigation by our resident marine biologists we will endeavour to work with the local fishermen to turn the bay into a dugong sanctuary, enabling them to see the benefits from the dugongs' protection.
