| | | | Amy wins ‘Young Social Entrepreneur of The Year 2006’ at the Edge Upstarts Awards hosted by The New Statesman Magazine. Bespoke Experience, the holding company for Guludo Beach Lodge, is proud to announce that Amy Carter, Joint Managing Director of Bespoke Experience, wins the prestigious Edge Upstarts Award last night for ‘Young Social Entrepreneur of The Year’ held at County Hall in conjunction with New Statesman Magazine.
In August 2002 Amy Carter and her partner Neal Allcock created ‘Bespoke Experience’ a fair trade tourism company. Bespoke was established with the objective of using tourism to sustainably relieve poverty and protect fragile environments in some of the poorest areas of the world. Bespoke invested in Northern Mozambique in 2003 and opened Guludo Beach Lodge in the Quirimbas National Park in November 2004. Guludo Beach Lodge has been designed by an award-winning architectural firm and has been constructed using local materials, techniques and labour and developed in such a way to ensure the presence of each guest actively benefits the local community and environment while staying in rustic exclusivity on a deserted white beach.
Amy says “I am delighted to win this prestigious award in support of our efforts to change the way people view tourism and look forward to realizing the dream of building many such destinations. Bespoke’s mission is to benefit the lives of tens of thousands of people, protect fragile environments, and create life changing travel experiences.”
Amy Carter who grew up in Guildford in Surrey is also the Co-Founder and Trustee of SERF (Social & Environmental Regeneration Fund). SERF is a new charity set up to work with communities in and around their lodges to sustainably reduce poverty and promote biodiversity.
The local community of Guludo has a population of 1300. Life expectancy is 37.8 years, and under-5 infant mortality is 29.5%. Guludo Beach Lodge employs 55 local staff who support over 500 family members, with one-third villagers in Guludo itself supported by Guludo Beach Lodge salaries. Amy’s impact on the local community where the first resort has been built is best summed up by the Chief of the village who said 'Before Bespoke arrived, everyone was hungry. Now no-one is hungry. Soon everyone is going to get really fat!'
