| | | | Bespoke’s architects Cullum & Nightingale have won an Award for thier design of Guludo Beach Lodge in Mozambique. The award was in the Small Consultancy Firm of the Year 2005 in the British International Expertise Awards.
The BCCB, the British Consultants and Construction Bureau run the British International Expertise Awards. BCCB is the leading UK trade association for the export of services. The awards were conceived to recognise the continued outstanding success of UK professional services throughout the world. The impact of these awards is increasing every year, and the number of entries increases every year as more individual consultants and smaller member firms participate in the competition.
The awards were presided over by HRH The Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO, who also presented the award to Richard Nightingale, Bespoke’s architect.
For the architects Cullum and Nightingale the aim was to create in Guludo a blueprint for low cost, resort development, which can be replicated elsewhere in the region. Tourism is the world’s largest industry and offers a unique opportunity even to the poorest areas in the world. Cullum and Nightingale believe that this project has had a significant effect on the local economy in Guludo and, by providing employment, a potential market for local produce and other means of generation income, it will help to alleviate the conditions of extreme poverty.
This sort of project also represents a tangible response to Britain’s determination to ‘make poverty history’ while providing an opportunity for wealthy foreign tourists, including British to engage with a very poor part of Africa in a way that is mutually beneficial.
